Statistical Abstract of Israel 2007-No.58 English/Arabic; Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics PREFACE The Central Bureau of Statistics [CBS] hereby presents the Statistical Abstract of Israel, 2007; the 58th annual abstract published since the establishment of the State. The Statistical Abstract is the most outstanding publication produced by the CBS. As in previous years, the Abstract presents data on various aspects of life for a broad range of users. The Abstract presents data from regular CBS publication series, as well as data from censuses and special or periodic surveys conducted by the CBS. More detailed data on these topics can be found in the other publications of the CBS. This Statistical Abstract presents new data in several fields. In the chapter on population, some of the tables were reorganized for the user's convenience. In addition, data on the population of immigrants from the USSR (former) and data on Ethiopian immigrants were removed from the tables in that chapter. In the field of Immigration, a new table was added with data on immigrants by first district and sub-district of residence in Israel, and by selected country of last residence. The Social Survey provides information on well-being and living conditions among the permanent population of Israel. This year, the Social Survey dealt with factors that affect participation and non-participation in the labour force among the population of Israel. In the field of Welfare, a new table was added, which includes data on families registered at social service departments in local authorities. This year, the field of Education includes tables on achievements of pupils in grades 5 and 8 on Growth Effectiveness Measures for Schools (GEMS), as well as data on persons aged 12-18 with criminal files (based on data obtained from the Israel Police), and new information on libraries in schools in the Hebrew and Arab education sectors. This year, new tables based on the findings of surveys of teaching staff in primary and intermediate schools were also added, in addition to new information on projections of pupils in the educational system for 2008-2012 (Hebrew and Arab Education). Furthermore, new tables were added on students and recipients of degrees from academic colleges and colleges of education, as well as a table on institutions for adult education, by field of study. In the field of Manufacturing, a table on the economic manufacturing account, by technological intensity was added. In the field of Construction, a new table on dwellings, by characteristics of building was added.

In addition, a search engine is available on the CD ROM, which allows for precise location of every requested word in the Tables and Introductions. Preparation of the Abstract - like all of the activities of the Central Bureau of Statistics - was a collaborative effort involving the families and people who took part in the various surveys, as well as establishments, businesses, institutions and government ministries. On behalf of the staff of the Central Bureau of Statistics, I wish to thank all these people. I would like to extend my personal gratitude to all of the staff members of the different units of the CBS for the dedicated work and daily efforts, and special thanks to the members of the Statistical Abstract steering committee for their important contribution, and to the team of experts from the various departments at the CBS who contributed toward maintaining consistency in the use of definitions and terms in the Abstract. Edith Noy was in charge of scientific editing. The Abstract was edited by Orit Penso with assistance from the staff of the Publication Division at the CBS. Finally, I would like to express my appreciation to all of the people who worked on the Abstract inside and outside of the Bureau.
