By Joseph Yahalom The Hebrew University, Jerusalem   The manuscripts, the facsimiles of which are being published here for the first time, are amongst the most ancient from The Geniza. They include the Piyyutim of Yannai, which already at a very early period ceased to be copied in this very special manner. Among them are Greek palimpsests which may be dated to the end of the fifth century C.E. Some of the manuscripts are punctuated with very ancient Palestinian punctuation. Indeed, it is true to say that this volume contains in it the major portion of the Piyyutic material with this form of punctuation. These facsimiles are reproduced from excellent photographs of the major manuscripts, and can serve as a sound basis for further research in the intricate field of ancient systems of punctuation.
